Dockside with Deb brings you closer to your fellow sailors through a weekly conversation with the people you might expect or want to meet while hanging out at your local sailing club or marina.

Episode 2: Wednesday 8 April 2020

Bret Perry

In this interview we speak with experienced sailor, rigger and yacht designer Bret Perry.

Bret's list of achievements includes 12 Sydney Hobart Yacht Races, the 2007 Amercia's Cup as a rigger for the French team, the 2008 - 2009 Volvo Ocean Race as a rigger for Equipo Telefonica and 5 years in the Mini Transat fleet with a yacht he co-designed, the RG650.

Bret talks about his experience in these major events, his sailing podcast Bar Karate and his newest venture, designing the X2 (new fast 30) in conjunction with Farr Yacht Design.

Episode 3: Wednesday 15 April 2020

Phil Ross

Phil Ross is an experienced sailor and editor of the Cruising Helmsman Magazine.

Phil describes himself as 'Ocean Gump' - just like Forrest Gump he's done all of these amazing things in sailing while actually having no idea or skill.

However, with experience ranging from the Montreal Olympic trails to competing in the Maxi circuit to a stint with the Kookaburra syndicate for the America's Cup, we don't think that description is fair at all! Come along and hear from Phil himself about how he started and has progressed through sailing, as well as some funny and stupid stories from his years on the seas.

Alice Tarnawski

Alice Tarnawski is an experienced racing sailor and physiotherapist.

She has been a regular at many one design and competitive sailing events over the last few years. Her results include a 1st place in the 2014 Harken International Youth Match Racing Championship, 1st in the 2016 University World Championship as part of the Australian team, and a 1st Corinthian / 3rd overall in the 2019 Farr 40 World Championships.

Alice talks to us about her competitive sailing experience, tips on how to develop skills to be successful in one design racing and how to stay fit and injury free for sailing.

Will Ryan

In this episode we speak to Australian Sailing Team member and Olympic medalist Will Ryan.

Will started sailing at the age of 13 and has been representing Australia for over 10 years. Along with team mate Mat Belcher, Will won a silver medal in the 470 class at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Will discusses how he got into sailing, his journey to the podium at the 2016 Rio Olympics, his tips for performing under pressure and how he's managing the disappointment of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic postponement.

Episode 6: Wednesday 6 May 2020

Mark Turnbull

Mark won a gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics in the 470 class before moving on to start his own sailing event management business and establishing the Sailing Champions League Asia Pacific. We cover all of these topics in this online chat.

Paul Billingham

Paul Billingham is the Commodore of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. In this interactive chat he talks to us about what's involved in being the CYCA Commodore and behind the scenes of one of the world's most icon offshore yacht races, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

Steve McConaghy

Steve is a professional sailor and tactician from Sydney. He's a 3 times World 11m Champion and represented Australia at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Steve talks to us about his extensive sailing career and tips on how to run onboard tactics.

Stacey Jackson

This week for Dockside with Deb I'm excited to welcome professional offshore sailor Stacey Jackson.

A two-time Volvo Ocean Race competitor, Stacey competed as part of the all-female Team SCA in 2014-15 and as part of Vestas 11th hour in 2017-18. In 2018, Stacey put together a team of professional all-female sailors to compete in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race on the 66ft Wild Oats X which she skippered to a 2nd overall IRC place.

Stacey is a passionate environmental campaigner and owner of NautiBags which produces hand-made bags out of locally-sourced recycled sails.

This week we welcome a panel of  Sydney Hobart Yacht Race crew to discuss how they worked their way up to doing this race, and their experience with the event.

In this episode we chat to Middle Harbour Yacht Club Commodore Peter Lewis about the club's plans for getting back into sailing after the COVID-19 closures, their Breakout Series 2020, the club's 80 year history, its redevelopment plans and what it's doing differently to support the future of sailing.

Nick Bice

Nick Bice has competed in the America’s Cup and the Volvo Ocean Race as both sailor and shore crew. He is the Commercial Director at Usafe Global (which has created a self-propelled life saving device), former Head of The Boatyard (a shared maintenance facility for the Volvo Ocean Race) and part of the Bar Karate podcast team. 

Join us to hear from Nick about his sailing history, experience maintaining the yachts for the VOR and how he's working to improve marine safety through Usafe Global.

Adrian Pettifor

In this episode of Dockside with Deb we speak with experienced Search and Rescue (SAR) aviation specialist Adrian Pettifor.

Adrian has been involved in several rescue missions for stricken yachts off the coast of Australia. He speaks to us about these rescues, technologies used to support SAR and what people should know if they are ever involved in an incident that requires SAR assistance.

Sailing for Good

In this week's episode of Dockside with Deb I'll speak with a panel of sailors who are doing good and giving back to their community through sailing.

Vanessa Dudley

This week's episode features an international champion and trailblazer in women's sailing, Vanessa Dudley.

Vanessa is an accomplished laser and offshore sailor, having competed in multiple Laser Women's Worlds, Laser Masters Worlds and the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 20 times. She speaks with us about how she got started in sailing, racing lasers and tips for others looking to get involved.
