Coronavirus: Jessica Watson’s advice for surviving isolation

Jessica Watson sailed solo around the world at just 16. Now she’s giving advice on how the rest of us can deal with isolation.

Jessica Watson is an Australian sailor who came to fame after becoming the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe in 2009 at just 16 years of age.

She was then named Young Australian of the Year in 2011 and has gone on to lead various projects, including a team that became the youngest ever to compete in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

During her round the world voyage, Jessica says she barely interacted with another human for 210 consecutive days, or close to seven months.

With so many people around the world in lockdown, Jessica is sharing her advice on surviving isolation.

“I’d be absolutely lying if I said there weren’t some tough days out there,” Jessica told The Daily Edition.

“The crazy thing is though I honestly never felt lonely - I couldn’t have been more physically alone during some points of the voyage, but I never use that word ‘lonely’ in reference to the voyage - I just didn’t feel that way.”

The larger purpose

Jessica said that when she did start to feel her mental health slip, she focussed on smaller tasks or the bigger picture.

“I quickly realised I had to take responsibility for my own mental fitness,” she said.

“I made sure when the going did get tough, that I gave myself smaller milestones to focus on.

“(I) also kept bringing myself back to the purpose - my next milestone or getting safely home.

“I suppose in the current situation, we’ve got this incredible purpose, this reason for staying home and for some people alone - I hope that sense of purpose is also helping people in our current situation.

Alone together

She may have sailed the high seas alone but Jessica isn’t going through the pandemic alone.

She’s been with partner Cameron for eight years.

“It actually has been going really well...so far I’m actually still just enjoying spending a bit more time with him.”
