Packed November at RNZYS

Issue date

Next month will see a raft of regattas and national championship events hosted by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, events which anyone can still get involved in.

Events include the Women’s 50:50 Regatta, Coast NZ Etchell National Championships, MRX Masters National Keelboat Championships, Harken Young 88 National Championships / North Sails Young 88 Owners Championships and the Barfoot & Thompson Women’s National Keelboat Championships.

Entry for all events is still open, and more information on all of these can be seen below.

Women’s 50:50 Regatta - November 1, 2020

Designed to encourage females to get on the helm, this is an open event for members of any yacht club but the skipper/helm of each boat must be a woman.

Mixed crews of four must have no more than two males in the team; all female crews may have four or five members.

This year they have changed things up and made it a fun afternoon event beginning at 1pm and wrapping up the day with a BBQ after racing.

There are already 10 teams entered, but the RNZYS invites more to get involved.

See here for more information, including the entry form.

Coast New Zealand International Etchell Class National Championships - November 6-8, 2020

The Etchell fleet provides one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to enjoy true one-design racing that is fun, competitive and social.

The nationals is a tough regatta, and two days of racing is followed by prizegiving back at the RNZYS. Could you be the winner this year?

See here for more information, including the entry form.

MRX Masters National Keelboat Championships - November 6-8, 2020

This event is raced in the fleet of Farr MRX keelboats on Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour and includes two full days of masters racing.

The regatta is open to helms over the age of 60 as of December 31, 2020, and crews over the age of 45 as of December 31, 2020.

See here for more information, including details on how to enter.

Young 88 Harken Nationals & North Sails Owners Championships - November 20-22, 2020

This year's event will see the national championships combine with the owners' championships to ensure maximum participation without over-committing boats and crews during what will now hopefully be a very busy sailing period.

Owner drivers will get two bites of the cherry and will be scored for the trophies and prizes of both events.

This year will also see a new and improved format of race types (windward/leewards and harbour race back to club) and locations and each day's racing will be followed by gatherings, expert race debriefs and a party.

The event currently has 18 entries with teams from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Ponsonby Cruising Club, Bucklands Beach Yacht Club, Glendowie Boating Club, Wakatere Boating Club and Royal Akarana Yacht Club.

See here for more information.

Barfoot & Thompson NZ Women’s National Keelboat Championships - November 26-29, 2020

This event is raced in the fleet of Farr MRX keelboats on Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour and features three full days of windward / leeward racing. The club's bi-weekly Tuesday Ladies Series has a strong lineup of sailors, all whom will be looking to be crowned the NZ women’s national keelboat champion.

Last year saw 13 teams take part and the RNZYS have received more than 10 entries, including defending champion Sally Garrett.
